There’s something magical about being part of the Camp Fire family. Rooted in Bend since 1916, Camp Fire Central Oregon has spent a solid century helping youth to discover their “sparks” and lead healthy, joyful and purposeful lives.

In Bend’s backyard, there haven’t been many—if any—such youth organizations that carry such a legacy. Through Camp Fire, kids in Grades PreK-12 flourish through dozens of summer camps and afterschool programs. It’s a place where they can belong authentically, connecting to the outdoors, others and themselves.

Summertime provides a perfect snapshot into how youth thrive. Kids such as “Karter” have come multiple summers to SummerKids camp, which serves grades 1-6, plus offers leadership opportunities for grades 7-12. For her, fun, weekly themes, guest speakers, Sparks Clubs, lots of fresh air, slipping down waterslides on Water Wednesdays, and camp counselors’ high-fives and big smiles keep her coming back.

Soon finding her stride, she built connections with other campers, inviting other “newbies” to join in play. Today, those kids have become her best camper buddies.

“When I’m with them, I feel happy,” says Karter. She adds, “Kindness can spread trust and love between friends.”

Experiencing and practicing kindness is a big reason why kids love SummerKids—and Camp Fire. Campers move at their own speed. They get curious, build confidence, and practice compassion, not just through camper connections but staff trained to support the well-being and heart of every kid. Nationally recognized for excellence, Camp Fire Central Oregon has earned the MESH+ Seal and a “Culture of Safety” award for its commitment to emotional, mental and physical health.

Growing up is hard. Today’s youth face unique and exceptional challenges, from the loneliness epidemic to academic pressures, technology saturation, growing economic inequity and more.

With current offerings in Bend, Three Rivers, and Sisters, as well as 30+ unique camp sessions for Summer 2026, Camp Fire provides families convenience and options.

“From hands-on STEAM activities to leadership projects and outdoor exploration, Camp Fire helps young people reach their potential by fostering curiosity, confidence, compassion and, ultimately, purpose,” Bowker says. “We genuinely support kids in navigating challenges by learning the life skills they need to thrive. Our hope is for each and every one of them to become contributing citizens on this earth.”

So while growing up may be hard, Camp Fire Central Oregon is an easy choice for local families. Being part of the Camp Fire experience means joining a century-long family and legacy of belonging, where kids discover connections of all kinds while parents find peace of mind. Magic, indeed.
